Euro 6 emissions could increase use of diesel particulate filters 25th July 2008
Trucks operating within the European Union will have to tighten emissions standards by 2014, something that is likely to lead to an increase in the takeup of diesel particulate filters.
Plans for the next Euro 6 standards could require trucks weighing over 2.6 tonnes and above to reduce NOx emissions by 80 per cent.
Robin Dickeson, Manager of commercial vehicle affairs at the Society of Motor Manufactures and Traders (SMMT), expects a 66 per cent reduction in the particulate matter emissions limit as well.
This could result in the increased use of diesel particulate filters and according to Mr Dickeson it is unlikely that manufacturers will be able to operate without them, if a numeric limit for NOx emissions was set.
Euro 6 regulations still need approval by the European Parliament, RoadTransport.com revealed.
The Euro 5 vehicle pollution standards come into force from October 1st and the new plans will replace them by 2014.
