DTI: Automotive emissions must come down 23rd June 2005
The United Kingdom Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has said that engine innovation must work on improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions.
Alun Michael, the minister for industry, was commenting today as new figures were published showing growing success in the automotive engine industry in the UK.
The figures, released by the DTI and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), show that the UK engine manufacturing industry has grown by 29 per cent over the last six years.
"Research and development are crucial if the industry is to remain at the forefront of innovative design," urged Mr Michael.
"Improving engine efficiency and reducing emissions are key areas of engine innovation and the government helps by supporting industry and academia to work closer together to bring cutting edge technology to commercial success."
The study also examines the UK's Future Vehicles strategy, including emissions standards and the role of biofuels.
Over the next three years, the DTI technology programme is investing £320 million in projects to improve efficiency and cut emissions, including developing energy efficient electric urban transport, hydrogen fuel cell technology and enhanced diesel engine lubrication systems.
