A grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be used to install diesel oxidation catalysts on 100 buses that take students to schools in Philadelphia.

A total of $143,068 was awarded to Hampton Roads Clean Cities to enable them to fit over 100 school buses with the emission reducing technology.

Cleaner fuel and the pollution reduction equipment will reduce pollution and help children with breathing disorders such as asthma.

Donald Welsh, Regional Administrator, said: "We're pleased that Hampton Roads Clean Cities is taking action so students can breathe cleaner air and live healthier lives."

Ultra low sulphur diesel fuel along with the new equipment will reduce emissions by up to 90 per cent.

The funding is part of a programme launched in 2003 called Clean School Bus USA which works to provide funding to ensure children can travel to school in an environmentally-friendly manner.
