Diesel car market set to boom 30th October 2007
Diesel-powered cars with platinum autocatalysts will proliferate as European carmakers seek to comply with EU emissions legislation, it has been predicted.
Last week, MEPs voted in favour of new regulations compelling European marques to cap average carbon dioxide emissions from new passenger cars at 125 g/km as of 2015.
In response, more and more manufacturers will opt for clean diesel technology, which will exceed previously predicted market penetration projections and will peak at close to 65 per cent before 2015, according to market analysis firm Global Insight.
However, after this point, Global Insight predicts, the introduction of Euro VI emissions standards will force diesel cars to be fitted with expensive systems, and in turn diesel cars' market penetration will begin to wane.
Global Insight presented its findings at an industry expo in Munich.
