Demand for cars and trucks is set to quadruple by 2035 if current trends continue, new research has claimed.

According to Global Insight, the number of cars and trucks on the road could quadruple to three billion by 2035 as a result of prosperity across the world.

The report, labelled 'Is Mobility As We Know It Sustainable?', reveals that the demand for cars could need four times the amount of physical space, raw materials and fuel that already exists.

Philip Gott, Director of Automotive Consulting, said that economic growth made a good case for the research.

But he also said that there were ways to stop the trend.

"Smaller, lighter vehicles and existing advances in powertrain technology can help minimise the impact of more vehicles on the road by reducing CO2 and fuel consumption by about 40 per cent and 50 per cent, respectively," he explained.

As a result of the research, Global Insight is developing a study to see what the Car of the Future may look like in 2035.

It hopes it will show future business investments and strategies as well as optimising the approach to development.
