DaimlerChrysler clocks up 1.2m emission-free miles 21st April 2006

Car manufacturer DaimlerChrysler says that it has clocked up more than 1.2 million miles of zero-emissions fuel cell travel.

The company claims that the total has been built up as a result of more than 100 fuel cell vehicles driving around the roads of the globe.

Several fuel cell models are produced by the German firm, including Mercedes-Benz F-Cell vehicles, Dodge Sprinter medium-duty fuel cell-powered vans and Citaro fuel cell buses.

Significant investment in fuel cell technology has been the driving force behind its progress in the area. Over $1 billion has been earmarked to be pumped into the technology by the firm.

It says that no other manufacturer comes close to its total fuel cell mileage.

That level of zero-emission mileage has already meant that 60,000 gallons of petrol and diesel has been saved based on the fuel consumption of an average vehicle in the US, which currently stands at 20 miles to the gallon.
