Daimler truck engine meets emissions standards

Daimler's trucks division has unveiled a new heavy-duty diesel engine, fitted with a platinum catalyst, which uses a diesel particulate filter and exhaust gas recirculation to comply with impending emissions legislation.

The use of the filter means that the engine meets 2007 Environment Protection Agency emissions standards, as well as more stringent requirements set to be in place by 2010, Diesel.net reports.

The Detroit Diesel DD15 employs an amplified common rail system (ACRS), in which the highest pressure is generated solely in the injectors, resulting in stable injection processes.

Meanwhile, turbo compounding technology in the six-cylinder engine is used to transfer extra power from the turbocharger to the crankshaft, through a shaft and a hydrodynamic coupling, which it is claimed cuts fuel consumption by up to five per cent compared with a Series 60 engine of similar specifications.

The engine is the first of Daimler's trucks division's new family of heavy duty engines which are aimed at the North American market.
