Corporate activity increases in mining sector 28th December 2007

New figures have revealed that the total value of corporate activity in the mining sector increased by more than a quarter over the course of 2007.

Research published by Bloomberg News and cited by MiningMX has revealed that there have been 1,386 transactions across the mining industry during 2007, representing a total value of $155.4 billion.

That is a 27 per cent increase in the value of deals completed compared to 2006, with the platinum sector contributing to this with a number of large deals.

Among these were Impala Platinum's acquisition of African Platinum's Leeuwkop operation, as well as the $1 billion successful bid for Eland Platinum's Elandsfontein project which will bring Xstrata firmly into the platinum mining industry.

Xstrata's acquisition of the Elandsfontein operation could become the big talking point of 2008 as the diversified mining group looks to establish itself firmly in the platinum market.
