Corning revealed yesterday (19th October) that it is expecting its glass output to be flat for the fourth quarter of 2009.

The world's largest maker of liquid crystal display screen glass saw its operations in Taiwan badly affected over the weekend after power disruption at its Taichung plant.

As a result, the company is now expecting fourth-quarter production to be roughly the same as in Q3, despite previous estimates that glass volume would be up by five per cent.

"The majority of our Taichung glass production continues to operate normally," said Chief Financial Officer James Flaws in a statement.

"However, the power disruption caused the shutdown of several of our glass melting tanks."

Mr Flaws added that the company is still assessing the amount of repair time required and how badly the amount of glass available for its customers will be compromised.

Corning was established in 1851 and is probably best known for its line of Corelle tableware and Pyrex cookware.
