Corning expands LCD manufacturing plant 7th February 2008
Corning Incorporated has announced that it will spend $453 million expanding its liquid crystal display (LCD) glass substrate manufacturing facility in Taichung, Taiwan.
Following its opening in 2006 this will be the fourth stage of expenditure at the Taichung facility.
The extended facility will bring better manufacturing capabilities for a range of substrates and the funding will be incurred over a two year period as production is scheduled to begin by the first quarter of 2009.
Currently, the facility manufactures Gen 5 and larger glass substrates that meet the demands of the LCD television market.
James Clappin, President of Corning Display Technologies, said: "As consumers express their clear preference for LCD televisions, the industry is growing at a rapid rate, and we are continuing to develop the Taichung facility in order to keep pace with projected demand.
"Corning is focused on meeting customer supply agreements to support panel manufacturers' ongoing advancement," he added.
The demand for glass in the LCD market is expected to continue due to the emergence of larger 50-inch LCD televisions.
