Corning could build glass-melting facility in China 4th December 2009
Corning is exploring the possibility of constructing a liquid crystal display (LCD) glass-melting facility in China, stargazette.com reports.
Chinese demand for LCD televisions, whose screens contain pgms, has been increasing rapidly in recent times, with estimates suggesting that sales volumes may increase by 50 per cent in 2010.
As a result, the company, which already has glass finishing sites in China, is now in discussions with officials about the possibility of establishing melting capabilities.
Corning has also been influenced by the news that several major LCD panel manufacturers intend to commence production of large units in the country.
At present, the New York-based firm only has glass-melting facilities in Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and the US, although it already processes ceramic inserts for catalytic converters in China.
"Because Corning is familiar with China's manufacturing infrastructure, the company is confident there are no major barriers to producing liquid crystal display glass there," notes the news provider.
A decision is expected to be announced early next year by Corning, which has developed into a major high-technology firm since being founded in 1851.
