Commodity market speculation to be revealed 1st December 2006

A new report is set to be unveiled in the next fortnight which will provide investors with a clearer understanding of how much speculation is present in commodity markets.

The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is set to launch the report, which could significantly alter the way the commission publishes its weekly Commitment of Traders Report.

Speaking to Reuters, CFTC Senior Special Counsel Donald Heitman commented: "I am reasonably confident that the commission will be coming out with a report within the next two weeks."

The report has been created in response to a survey carried out by the CFTC in June this year. The poll asked investors about the CFTC's weekly figures on commodity investments and the commission received nearly 6,000 emails from respondents.

Critics of the weekly reports from the CFTC have argued that they do not monitor large over-the-counter trades in commodities using complex instruments, only covering the New York Mercantile Exchange, the New York Board of Trade and Chicago Board of Trade.
