Cold weather hydrogen fuel cell testing centre opened 2nd November 2007
A new research centre has opened in Michigan to conduct tests of hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles with platinum autocatalysts in real world, cold- weather military applications.
The project is a collaboration between the US Departments of Energy and Defence, Chevron Technology Ventures (CTV) and Hyundai-Kia America under the Controlled Hydrogen Fleet and Infrastructure Demonstration and Validation Programme.
Using Chevron's propriety advanced steam methane reforming system, the hydrogen station will power a fleet of five Hyundai Tucson fuel cell vehicles, which will be tested by the US Army and the National Guard.
Dana Flanders, President of CTV, said: "Collaborating with the military on this project will enhance our research into hydrogen as a transportation fuel.
"Their significant experience in advanced technology makes them a superb partner."
The station, which is located in the Selfridge Ambridge military airbase, is the fifth such hydrogen demonstration station commissioned by CTV.
The firm's other stations are in California and Florida, with each using a different hydrogen production technology.
