Christies to auction platinum pieces 5th October 2005

Christies in New York is preparing for its Magnificent Jewels auction on October 19th, with some rare platinum pieces topping the bill.

The top lot at the event will be a rare pink diamond set in a gold and platinum ring, which is expected to fetch between $2.5 and $3 million.

However, Rahul Kadakia, head of Christies' jewellery department, has told Forbes that the item is likely to go for much more than that figure. The combination of the fashionable platinum, together with the internally flawless 25 carat pink diamond look set to be a winning combination at the auction.

The expected clamour for the items going under the hammer at Christies highlights the growing interest in the jewellery market as a whole.

In recent years the market has picked up somewhat, with the growing demand for platinum considered to be a major factor in that rise.

The Christies event will also see the sale of a four carat vivid blue diamond set in a platinum ring estimated to sell for up to £2 million, which was crafted by Fifth Avenue jeweller Harry Winston.
