Chinese retain appetite for platinum jewellery 7th March 2006

China's jewellery industry is riding out the rising costs of pgms, with the country continuing to embrace platinum pieces according to state press.

Reports in the Beijing Daily claimed that the rapidly expanding country – the world's fastest growing economy – had proved resilient in the face of price hikes.

World Platinum Association China Region president Lin Ziyuan said that demand continued to rise unabated.

"The skyrocketing world price of noble metals has not affected the sale of platinum ornaments," he said.

Citing a domestic survey, the newspaper said Chinese consumers were continuing to embrace the platinum group metals.

One catalyst for the market has apparently been the Year of the Dog – said to be a good year for marriage – with couples choosing platinum as their bridal jewlelry of choice.

Chinese New Year was also said to have provided a boost, as sales rose by ten per cent in the 30 days around January 29th.
