Chinese bridal jewellery set to soar 13th January 2006

Interest in bridal jewellery in China is expected to grow over the coming 12 months, thanks to the change of the year.

Chinese new year begins on what will be January 29th according to Western calendars and the beginning of the Year of the Dog is anticipated to bring with it a jump in weddings, following the end of the unlucky Year of the Rooster.

And platinum looks set to be of major importance to many getting married in China, with those in the major cities keen to have the precious metal for their bridal jewellery.

Zhang Fuqin, a saleswoman at First Asia Jewelry in Shanghai, told Reuters that those on higher incomes in the city are desperate to get their hands on platinum over other metals.

She explained that couples "feel platinum is more authentic" and therefore prefer the precious metal over white gold, which she said those on lower incomes preferred.

However, in the provincial towns and cities, the lower value of palladium compared to platinum has made palladium bridal jewellery and white gold more popular.
