China, US important to automakers in 2011 4th January 2011
Automakers will be banking on growth in emerging markets such as China, Russia, Brazil and India this year, as well as more established recovering markets like the US.
While the European market was generally weaker, Reuters reports that Belgium and France both saw encouraging figures in December, with car sales rising by 10.56 per cent in the former country and a clutch of new orders in the latter.
"With the orders from the end of the year we know that the first three months of 2011 overall will be good ... afterwards, there is real uncertainty," Flavien Neuvy of French consumer credit organisation Cetelem told the news provider.
Meanwhile, Hyundai said recently that it is targeting sales of 6.33 million for 2011, higher than the 5.75 million it targeted the previous year.
Chinese newspaper the People's Daily also reports that the Chinese market for passenger cars is set to exceed 11 million units in 2010, according to analysts from Roland Berger Strategy Consultants.
The main drivers of this development are China's rapid GDP growth and a rise in disposable income among the country's population, the report said.
