China explores diesel solution 29th November 2005

China has announced plans to improve its diesel technologies in an effort to reduce emissions.

A state official has revealed that the country is looking into the development of clean technology in diesel powered engines as the most efficient way of allowing the country's economy to grow while at the same time ensuring that China meets its targets on reducing emissions.

Speaking at the 2005 China Automotive Industry Forum in Shanghai, Chen Qingtai, an economist at the state council development and research centre, told the Shanghai Daily: "The improvement in diesel technology has matured after long years spent in its development on the world market, with an effective impact on saving energy consumption as well as positive ecological results."

He added that the improvements in technology could provide savings of as much as 30 per cent on fuel consumption and explained that utilising the technological developments in diesel would be cost efficient for the country because there is no need to "conduct massive renovation and infrastructure construction".

Mr Chen also advocated the development of a diversified strategy for the country in its efforts to cut carbon emissions, by concentrating on a range of methods including using diesel, hybrids and fuel cells.
