China considers potential of Zimbabwe's platinum 25th February 2008

China is considering the potential of investing in Zimbabwe's platinum mining sector following a visit to the country by Gao Hucheng, Chinese Deputy Minister of Commerce.

Leading a 22 man delegation, Mr Hucheng met with Zimbabwe's cabinet and expressed an interest in exploration activities - particularly platinum.

According to mineweb, a source who attended the meeting said that Zimbabwe's officials were delighted with the prospect of forming a relationship with China.

Amos Midzi, Mines and Mining Development Minister, told the website: "The visit has been very helpful as we have agreed to what the delegation has asked for from us.
"They want gold and platinum mining exploration and investment opportunities and we are willing as government to partner them because they are sincere investors," he added.

The news follows a deal that saw Sinosteel buy a stake in Zimasco Consolidated Enterprises in one of China's first moves in Zimbabwe's mining sector.
