Canada takes hydrogen technology lead 29th November 2007

Canada has taken the lead in hydrogen and fuel cell technology as it has been elected as the new chair of the International Partnership for the Hydrogen Economy (IPHE).

The country's Hydrogen Highway project in British Columbia has also been recognised by the IPHE, which has awarded the scheme its Technical Achievement Award.

Commenting on the decision to make the country the IPHE's chair, Minister of Industry Jim Prentice said: "Recognised throughout the world for its expertise in developing hydrogen and fuel cell technology, Canada is well positioned to chair IPHE and contribute to the development of these clean, secure and reliable energy technologies."

The Hydrogen Highway scheme has been backed by $33 million from the Canadian government's Canadian Transportation Fuel Cell Alliance and is designed to boost the growth and development of hydrogen and fuel cell vehicles across the country.

Gary Lunn, Minister of Natural Resources, added: "Canada is doing what it takes to be a world leader in the fight against climate change and in the development of clean energy. The development of hydrogen fuel cell technologies is part of our balanced plan aimed at reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and air pollutants and encouraging our economic growth."
