Canada debuts palladium coin 13th September 2005
Canada has launched its first ever coin made from palladium, the Royal Canadian Mint has revealed.
Unveiling the $50 Maple Leaf coin, which features an updated portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by artist Susanna Blunt, the Mint looks to be using it as a platform to launch other palladium products in the future, if the coin proves favourable with investors.
Launched alongside a gold $50 coin and a silver $1 piece, palladium was chosen by the Mint because of its unique properties.
In a statement, the Mint explained that the pgm was chosen because of its "superior conductivity and ductility, resistance to oxidation and corrosion, as well for its strength and durability".
The statement also suggested that the use of palladium will provide a new option for investors, and the use of the metal could be extended beyond the $50 coin because of its robust nature, which ensures longevity.
