Californian hydrogen highway hits setbacks 11th January 2008
California's bid to build a network of refuelling stations for fuel cell cars could be in jeopardy after three companies who had been due to contribute to its construction pulled out.
Under State Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's plan, America's most populous state would construct a network of 100 hydrogen refuelling stations by 2010, as the state administration attempts to cut the area's carbon footprint.
However, according to reports, three of the companies which were due to construct fuel stations have now declined a state grant for the work.
Potentially, most damaging among these is the withdrawal of Pacific Gas & Electric, which had been set to build a crucial station in San Carlos to serve the San Francisco Bay Area.
In order to address the setbacks, Mary Nichols, who heads the California Air Resources Board, is to convene with energy firms, members of the California Fuel Cell Partnership and leading auto manufacturers to decide on a new strategy.
