British Gas in new 16th August 2005
British Gas has announced plans for a new fuel cell powered boiler that is capable of producing both power and heat for the home.
The utilities firm will use the expertise of Ceres Power Holdings in a bid to commercialise the nascent technology in the sector.
The companies have signed a heads of agreement as they work on ways to deliver a cost-effective in-home combined heat and power (CHP) unit.
Using a tried and tested format Ceres Power says its fuel cell can produce enough energy to heat homes, with individual fuel cells collectively laid in a "cube of cells".
Ceres Power chief executive Peter Bance said the partnership with British Gas would help take the technology from the research lab and into the home.
"Our ultimate goal is to enable people to have a highly efficient, extremely safe and environmentally-friendly miniature power station in their homes, saving them money on their energy bills and enhancing Britain's energy security," he commented.
Ceres says its fuel cell is capable of running on both natural gas and bottled gas, as well as hydrogen.
