British diesel market continues to flourish 7th September 2005
The British diesel market is continuing to soar, as consumers embrace the cost-effective and environmental benefits of the vehicles.
Figures from the SMMT show that diesel registrations grew in August against a backdrop of a weaker market.
While overall new registrations were down on a yearly basis by 5.7 per cent, diesel bucked the trend, recording a 10.7 per cent rise in the month.
SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan commented: "In a weaker August new car market, diesel continued to star."
Alluding to the benefits of the vehicles, Mr Macgowan said it was clear consumers were warming to diesel as fuel prices continue to escalate.
"Cheaper motoring and greater model choice are just two of its selling points; better fuel consumption is also helping to lower average carbon dioxide emissions from the tailpipe," he said.
Diesel cars, which typically use a platinum catalyst to help curtail emissions, have now been climbing in sales for almost five straight years.
