Braemore's pgm production to be boosted by smelter upgrade 10th September 2008
Braemore Resources has today (September 10th) announced the successful installation of a new smelter which will increase its production rates considerably.
The 3.2-megawatt smelter, which has been completed at the Mintek facility in Johannesburg, is part of the company's 10-megawatt development programme and has the ability to process around 2,000 tonnes per month.
With feed grade permitting, it will allow Braemore Resources to produce platinum group metals (pgm) in an iron-nickel alloy at an annualised rate of up to 70,000 oz per year.
Leon Coetzer, Chief Executive Officer of the company, said: "We have completed this upgrade ahead of time and on budget, and are pleased to be delivering on our stated objectives.
"We have worked closely with Mintek to commercialise their technology and we look forward to providing an economically and technologically viable smelting solution to the pgm sector."
Braemore Resources also managed to reduce the initial proposed eight-week closure of the smelter for improvements to four weeks as it aims to meet demand for smelting high-chrome concentrates.
