A new platinum chromium alloy stent developed by Boston Scientific Corporation (BSX) is expected to simplify catheter delivery procedures for a broader range of patients in India.

The new Promus Element drug-eluting coronary stent system has just been launched in the country and features a unique geometry which enables more consistent legion coverage and improved deliverability.

Commenting on the potential benefits offered by the new stent, New Delhi Fortis Escort Heart Institute's Ashok Seth MD noted: "The new platinum chromium alloy and stent design of the PtCr [platinum chromium] Element Stent series represent significant innovations in DES [drug-eluting stent] technology.

"I believe the Element platform offers performance improvements that could simplify procedures and allow treatment of a broader range of patients."

BSX has also strengthened the density of the platinum chromium alloy, which enables the use of thinner struts.

Clinical trials of the stent are currently ongoing at more than 140 sites worldwide, involving over 1,500 patients, that will assess the efficacy and safety of the Element stent.
