GM Surpasses Toyota as World’s Largest Automaker on Japan Quake (05/08/11)
Toyota has lost its crown as the world's largest automaker following major production disruption since the earthquake and tsunami in March.
General Motors sold more units during the first six months of 2011, overtaking the Japanese firm with an 8.9 per cent rise in sales.
Toyota shifted 3.71 million vehicles in H1, while GM sold 4.536 million and Volkswagen 4.12 million.
It follows a 23 per cent drop in output at Toyota since the disaster in Japan.
Meanwhile, South Korea's biggest car maker Hyundai witnessed an 11 per cent hike in sales over the period.
