Australian groups backing recycling regulations 6th May 2003
Australian environmental groups have joined together in an effort to raise the amount of recycling done on electronics goods such as computers.
Jeff Angel, director of the Total Environment Centre, says that the Australian Information Industries Association recent pilot recycling program for computers should be extended.
'Dumping these products is a huge waste of valuable, non-renewable resources such as gold, platinum and silver,' Mr Angel told the Sydney Morning Herald.
Pressure for a wider reaching scheme to be begun is now mounting, with a number of environmental groups backing a campaign to make industry take back products such as computers and televisions at the end of their life cycle, warning they will push for regulations if recycling schemes are not forthcoming this year.
The Environment Protection Authority has recently issued a list of 15 products it is targeting as priorities for their recycling potential.
