Asian nations target emissions 19th December 2006
A group of Asian nations have agreed to tackle the growing problem of climate change and are set to clamp down on vehicle emissions.
Following a meeting of 20 Asian nations meeting in Indonesia last week, the countries have established the Yogyakarta Summary, which is a non-binding document setting out their commitment to improving air quality in the region.
New data has suggested that as many as 537,000 people die prematurely in cities across Asia as a result of air pollution every year, but the new proposals are designed to tackle this problem, with improvements in vehicle emission technology high on the agenda.
Transport pollution will not be the only area looked at by the new agenda, which will also include industrial emissions and transnational pollution, but reducing the extent of pollution caused by vehicles will still play a major role.
