Anooraq to double Bokoni pgm output by 2013 8th October 2010
Anooraq Resources is planning to double pgm production at its Bokoni mine in South Africa over the next two years, it emerged yesterday (7th October).
Chief Executive Philil Kotze revealed that the company will look to push output at the facility to 160,000 tonnes per month, or 240,000 oz per year, by 2013.
Furthermore, Anooraq will aim to boost production to 400,000 tonnes per month at a grade of 4.4g/t by 2016, which translates to 570,000 oz per year, Mining Weekly reports.
This would put the firm among the top platinum producers, which would be a major turnaround, considering Bokoni has traditionally been the highest-cost mine on the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex.
Anooraq will supply 51 per cent of the R600 million required for the first phase of increasing output, with Anglo Platinum contributing the remaining funding.
The company also revealed recently that its labour restructuring saw productivity and efficiency improve by 32 per cent, while tonnes milled at Bokoni rose by 29 per cent.
Anooraq controls the third-largest pgm resource base in South Africa, with a 26km strike length and average grades of about 4.2g/t.
