Angloplat offers workers improved contract 2nd August 2004

The world's largest platinum miner has attempted to draw a line under an ongoing dispute at its Rustenburg plant.

Anglo Platinum (Angloplat) told Mining Weekly it had raised its contractual bonus offer to base-metal plant workers in a bid to avert strike action.

Its bonus offer has been increase from a provisional 28.8 per cent to 29.4 per cent.

The new offer follows an official declaration of a dispute by the union, and comes close to the original 30 per cent demand from workers.

"The audit is complete and we will be meeting with the unions to give them the new figure," spokesperson Mike Mtakati revealed.

Solidarity and the National Union of Mineworkers represent around two-thirds of the unionised workforce in the Rustenburg operations.
