Angloplat finally settles NUM strike 14th October 2004

Angloplat has announced that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) strike at its platinum operations has finally come to an end.

The world number one platinum firm said that it had had its revised wage deal offer accepted by the NUM, with miners now set to return to work.

Under the new deal Angloplat will offer a range of pay rises, including 7.75 per cent for higher grades, 8 per cent for lower grades and 9.5 per cent for the lowest grades.

In a statement the platinum giant confirmed: " It is expected that all striking employees will be back at work as soon as possible."

The news brings to an end the 13-day strike, and follows the company's agreement with the Solidarity union yesterday.

Rival platinum firm Impala Platinum - the world's second largest platinum miner - also settled its pay dispute this week, as the industry now seeks to right itself after a turbulent few weeks.

Earlier today Angloplat revealed that while the NUM had sought to prolong industrial action among its members, the number of miners returning to work had been steadily rising.
