Angloplat and Lonmin back to full power 31st March 2004

Electricity supplies to two of the world's largest platinum producers, Angloplat and Lonmin, have been restored to full power after shortages hit the firms' facilities in the Rustenburg area of South Africa last week.

However, according to Reuters, both companies said the reduced power supply did little to disrupt production.

The world number one (Anglopat) and world number three (Lonmin) platinum producers have had reduced electricity supplies since March 22 when problems with a transformer occurred.

Fani Zulu, a spokesman for Eskom, the utility company supplying electricity in the region, explained that emergency work allowed full power to be restored on Monday night.

"Throughout this morning we have been in contact with the various mining companies in the area, informing them that we are now in a position to meet their maximum load," he said.

The number two producer, Implats, was not affected by the power disruption as it uses a separate electricity network.
