Anglo Platinum workers reject pay increase offer 1st September 2009
Workers employed by Anglo Platinum have rejected the company's latest wage increase offer, according to a report by Bloomberg on Thursday (27th August).
The world's largest platinum producer has offered the mineworkers a rise of between nine and ten percent in order to stave off the threat of industrial action.
However, the National Union of Mineworkers has revealed that its members are angling for an 11 per cent hike for entry-level employees and for more senior workers to receive a nine per cent rise.
"Workers are not accepting the offer," Oupa Komane, the union's Deputy General Secretary, told the news provider.
Bloomberg also confirmed that an Anglo spokesperson was not available to comment on the report.
Wage talks in South Africa are watched with great interest by the pgm industry as any strike action could potentially result in production being seriously impacted.
Anglo Platinum has a number of mining, smelting and refining operations in the country's North West and Limpopo provinces.
