Anglo Platinum wins sustainability plaudits 19th July 2006

South African miner Anglo Platinum (Angloplat) has been handed an award recognising the standard of its mining sustainability reporting last year.

The world's biggest platinum miner was given the award by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) during its annual awards ceremony, according to South African publication, Business Day.

The judges described the 30 reports submitted by Angloplat as an "example of genuine CEO commitment to sustainability".

"The sustainability report is the window to the outside world, so it is very important for us to get the recognition that we are doing well as far as reporting is concerned," said the platinum firm's chief executive, Ralph Havenstein.

Sustainability reporting helps to improve communication between companies and stakeholders.

"Sustainability reporting is already entrenched in Europe and the US, so it is gratifying to see that more and more South African companies are embracing sustainability reporting as best practice," said the association's South African head, Nirri Nair.
