Anglo Platinum to change name ahead of production boost 29th March 2011
Anglo Platinum, the world's biggest producer of platinum, has confirmed is changing its name as it announces a drive to increase output.
From April 20th, the firm will be called Anglo American Platinum, though it will still be known as Amplats, Mining Weekly reports.
Shareholders approved the change at the annual general meeting (AGM) in Johannesburg. The company, part of the Anglo American Group, will still be listed as AMS at the JSE.
Also confirmed at the AGM were the plans to increase production to 2.6 million ounces of the platinum in 2011.
This marks an increase of more than 100,000 oz on the 2.57 million refined ounces produced and the 2.52 million ounces sold last year.
According to the news provider, Amplats wants to boost output without increasing costs, which chief executive officer Neville Nicolau said will be dependent on continued improvements in productivity and grades.
He explained the production targets for 2011 represent the third year of a "long turnaround process".
Last month, Amplats announced a multi-billion rand economic empowerment ownership transaction designed to promote long-term sustainable development in host communities and key labour sending areas that are not benefitting from the company's Black Economic Empowerment programme.
