Anglo Platinum restarts work at Amandelbult 28th August 2008

Production at Anglo Platinum's Amandelbult mine has resumed following the suspension of work because of a fatal accident.

The government suspended operations at the mine after the incident but drilling and blasting has resumed.

Production losses from the incident are not yet known but operations have been stopped for ten days.

Anglo Platinum expected second-half production to rise 'significantly' after resolving difficulties of flooding and providing power problems are not repeated.

The first half of the year saw the production of platinum drop by 16 per cent to one million ounces.

It lost 67,000 oz when flooding stopped operations at the Amandelbult mine earlier in the year.

But Simon Tebele, a spokesman for the firm, told Bloomberg that work was starting "right now" to ensure platinum production was up and running as soon as possible.

The Amandelbult mine has been working on a safety initiative that aimed to eliminate injuries from the mine, as well as reducing the lost-time injury frequency rate.
