Anglo Platinum faces strike threat 20th September 2004

Anglo Platinum, the world's largest platinum producer, is facing strike action after wage negotiations broke down.

Company representatives have been in talks with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in the hope of reaching a breakthrough.

However, reports over the weekend suggested that the two sides were in deadlock.

"There is no agreement yet and we haven't changed our position on wages,' NUM spokesman Archie Palane told the Bloomberg news agency.

"If they don't come back on Monday with a revised mandate, we'll ask for a strike certificate to be issued.'

The NUM is demanding a nine per cent pay increase for its members.

So far Anglo Platinum has been reluctant to go above 7.25 per cent.
