Anglo Platinum faces dispute 11th July 2007

Anglo Platinum is facing protracted negotiations after mining union Solidarity declared a dispute with the mining giant.

An official from the South African mining union said that the dispute has been declared following Anglo Platinum's failure to increase its wage offer.

Reint Dykema has told Reuters that Anglo Platinum has refused to increase its wage offer from an eight to ten per cent pay rise, with Solidarity sticking to its demands of double-digit growth across the board.

However, the National Union of Mineworkers, South Africa's largest mining union, remains in discussions with Anglo Platinum.

Declaring a dispute is the first step towards official strike action and it appears likely that Solidarity and Anglo Platinum will now have to go through a mediation process in an effort to resolve the issues.
