Anglo Platinum empowerment deal wins award 29th February 2008

The Anglo Platinum deal with Anooraq Resources and Mvela Resources was named as deal of the year at the annual DealMakers awards this week.

The R7.6 billion deal was completed in September and gave black investors control over South Africa's third and fifth largest platinum mining houses at a price of at least R3.2 billion.

As well as helping relations between Anglo American and the South African Government, the deal boosted empowerment in the platinum mining sector.

Webber Wentzel Bowens (WWB) and Weksmans were the top legal advisers with WWB the legal advisor on the Anglo Platinum black economic empowerment transaction.

Meanwhile, Standard Bank, which was involved in the deal of the year, dealt with R109 billion worth of transactions last year to make it top of the pile for deal value with Investec finalising 63 deals to give it the best deal flow figures.

Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) was runner-up in both categories as it completed 36 deals worth R90.8 billion.
