Anglo American to focus on platinum 15th June 2005

Anglo American has revealed it is to focus on its platinum business, in order to boost business and work on areas where it has a market edge.

According to the firm it will keep buying into sectors at the bottom of the commodity price cycle, since this has helped it achieved $15 billion of acquisitions since 1999.

In addition, $9 billion worth of non-crore business has been conducted during that time.

Tony Trahar, CEO of Anglo American, told Reuters: "We are looking at expanding into China, India, South America and anywhere we find assets.

"Probably platinum is the area where the big money is being spent, but its not one overwhelmingly big project, it is a series of projects that have been planned."

Anglo American claims that China has been the best area for business, significantly driven by its demand for platinum jewellery.

"We see a very robust supply picture for platinum, and we have strong reserves to continue meeting that demand," Mr Trahar added.track
