Anglo American to concentrate on platinum 23rd May 2006
Miner Anglo American has confirmed that it is to sell its remaining shares in a gold producer in order to concentrate its focus on its core mining interests, including platinum.
The mining giant said that it was planning to sell the remainder of its 42 per cent minority stakehold in AngloGold Ashanti over the next two to three years, according to MarketWatch.
It has already sold interests in other non-mining companies involved in the production of steel and paper, after pressure from investors to concentrate on its core operations.
Its platinum mining subsidiary Anglo Platinum dominates the world's platinum producing market, accounting for 38 per cent of total global platinum supply.
Its principal operations are located in the world's richest platinum reserve, the Bushveld complex in South Africa.
Anglo Platinum missed its production targets last year, although many believe that its fellow platinum giant Lonmin will also struggle to meet production owing to the temporary closure of its main furnace earlier this year.
