Anglo American puts platinum operations on standby 29th January 2008
Anglo American's platinum mining operations in South Africa have been temporarily impeded by power shortages in the country.
The resulting emergency measures have resulted in all platinum processing operations being put on standby, with no refined metals being produced.
However, essential pumping is continuing and the plant is still available for use.
The available power is being used for underground mining activities to maintain a safe working environment, with support in place ready for a speedy return to full production.
Meanwhile, all coal mines are now back in operation and working at full capacity.
Sishen and Thabazimbi, Anglo American's Kumba Iron ore mines, continue to operate with a minimal impact on production.
With regard to base metals, there is limited production at Namakwa Sands and no production at Black Mountain operations. The Skorpion zinc operation continues to run on reduced power.
Anglo American has created an energy task team, which has met with the ministerial committee working to resolve the energy crisis.
