Anglo American mining licences renewed 21st February 2008
Mining licences belonging to Anglo American have been renewed by the South African government, it has been reported.
According to Anglo American CEO Cynthia Carroll, new rights have been granted for all platinum, coal, iron-ore and base metals mines by the South African Department of Minerals and Energy (DME).
The decision is subject to the completion of final documentation, and has been confirmed by a South African government official.
It is thought that the licences will have been officially granted by the end of March.
Ms Carroll went on to declare that Anglo American has now met all black economic empowerment requirements as per the country's mining charter.
"I am delighted with the progress that we have made towards our goal of establishing significant and meaningful Black Economic Empowerment across all our businesses in South Africa and that agreement has been reached regarding Anglo American's new order mining rights," she commented.
"This is a landmark achievement for the group and for the many black empowered businesses with which we are partnered. It provides our business with greater certainty in South Africa and enables the group to continue to make a strong contribution to South Africa's prosperity and economic growth."
