Al Gore to urge Australian government to adopt Kyoto protocol 7th May 2003

Former US-vice president Al Gore is to visit Australia this month in a bid to convince the Howard government to sign up to the Kyoto protocol.

Mr Gore, who secured the majority of the popular vote in the last presidential election, will be speaking in Sydney about the reduction of greenhouse gases.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald he will use the platform to urge the Australian government to back the 1997 protocol.

He will deliver the speech at Sydney's Westin Hotel on May 29, arguing against US President George Bush's policies on global security and environmental sustainability.

Mr Gore will meet Premier Bob Carr and former federal Liberal leader John Hewson, who are also pressuring the Federal Government to ratify the Kyoto accord.
