Airbus tests PEM fuel cell system in DLR aircraft 21st February 2008

Airbus has successfully tested a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system in flight, it has been revealed.

Fuel cells were used to power backup hydraulic and electrical power systems onboard a civil aircraft - the A320 test aircraft owned by the DLR, the German Aerospace Centre.

During the test, the PEM fuel cell system generated up to 20 kW of electrical power, and the only waste product was water.

The test proved the system's durability under high gravity loads during turns and zero gravity aircraft manoeuvres.

"Fuel cells offer tremendous potential environmental benefits and operational savings," commented Patrick Gavin, Airbus executive vice president for engineering.

"This is another example of Airbus providing leadership for an eco-efficient industry, one which creates value with less environmental impact."

It is hoped that this test could pave the way for Airbus and its partners to further develop ways in which fuel cell technology can be used to power other aircraft systems.

Other potential uses for fuel cells include as an aircraft's auxiliary power unit.
