An air purifier with a platinum filter that can help prevent sick home syndrome and safeguard homeowners' health has been developed by a home appliance manufacturer.

LG Electronics' PS-M550, which is one a number of appliances with health-giving benefits that the company has developed, is the first of its kind to incorporate the HEPA filter, which eliminates noxious substances and smells from homes and from polluted air.

The innovation means that the purifier is much more efficient than existing models and is able to trap over 99 per cent of dust particles as diminutive as 0.3 microns and is therefore an effective bulwark against the spread of viruses.

It is expected that the PS-M550 will find a particularly strong market in fast-growing economies in the Middle East and Africa, especially in countries where respiratory, skin and nutrition-related diseases are a problem.

Mr Ki-Wan Kim, President of Middle East and Africa Headquarters at the LG Healthcare Campaign, said: "In the Middle East region, health concerns are dramatically escalating due to many factors including the construction boom, increasing traffic and changes in diet. LG is expected to lead this new category of health-conscious home appliances here."

LG Electronics' range of health-conscious home appliances also includes air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, vacuum cleaners and light-wave ovens.
