80 days challenge for green cars 16th February 2006

A round the world rally for hybrid and alternative energy vehicles is being established for 2008, it has been revealed.

Up to 20 teams driving the latest in alternative fuel technology will drive more than 22,000 miles over 80 days, together with 20 teams driving classic cars.

The Great Race 2008 is to begin in New York City exactly 100 years after the "Greatest Auto Race" did the same, and will end in Paris.

The 1908 race was designed to demonstrate the capabilities of the latest technology – which in that case was the combustion engine propelled vehicle.

this latest incarnation aims to do the same by showcasing the latest automotive technologies, including green propulsion systems such as hybrid vehicles and possibly fuel cell ones as well.

The race organisers are challenging entrepreneurs and manufacturers to create vehicles to take part in the race, but note that choosing the appropriate fuel type and technology will be crucial if teams are to complete the gruelling course.

After heading across America to San Francisco, the cars will be shipped to Shanghai, from where they will cross Eurasia to end in Paris.

The winning team will walk away with $1 million.

Bill Ewing of Rally Partners, the event coordinators, commented: "[T]he Great Race 2008 will test and prove automotive propulsion technologies that will transport the world's citizens in the 21st century."
