30th anniversary for low emission sensors 8th September 2006
Industrial technology manufacturer Bosch is celebrating 30 years of producing lambda sensors, which are used in regulated catalytic converters.
The company first developed and marketed the sensors 30 years ago and it has announced that it recently saw production of the devices pass the 400 million mark.
Bosch is now rolling off over 40 million of the sensors every year, Dr Steffen Berns, executive vice president engineering for gasoline systems has revealed, with production taking place in Germany, the USA, Korea and China.
The technology became critical in the 1970s when emissions regulations in the US were substantially tightened. As countries across the world have continued to crack down on emissions in a bid to tackle the problem of climate change, Bosch's lambda sensors have become vital in reducing pollution from vehicles.
Demand for the sensors has increased in the past four years, since they have been added to diesel engines to adjust the quantity of injected fuel more precisely, helping to facilitate optimum operation as well as reducing pollutant emissions.
