'Sacked' Implats miners to return to work 28th June 2004
Impala Platinum says that it has thrashed out an agreement with the National Union of Mineworkers to reinstate workers who were 'sacked' after a wildcat strike.
A total of 1,700 Impala Platinum workers were reported to have been sacked following a strike at the Rustenburg pgm site, but operations are now scheduled to resume at full capacity tomorrow.
In a joint statement the NUM and Implats confirmed that a compromise had now been reached, adding that management and the union will "discuss the issues raised during this industrial action through the bargaining mechanisms in place at Impala".
Implats also made clear that any shifts lost would be made up, and that there had been no significant impact on production.
A so-called 'wildcat' strike brought operations to a halt last Wednesday, with operations executive Paul Visser initially announcing the dismissal of 1,700 workers.
